No Tricks This Halloween With These Healthy Halloween Treats!

hlw-blog-halloween

It’s that time of year again! Halloween is a time to get creative with your costume, channel your inner artist with a pumpkin, and get the kids together for a night of games; bobbing for apples, wrap the mummy, and of course, trick or treat.

However, these ‘treats’ are usually bursting with processed sugar, preservatives and E numbers, which we all know to be the true horrors of Halloween, with their links to obesity, heart disease and hyperactivity.

So we have found five tasty alternatives to keep your kids happy and healthy this Halloween! With their creative and fun appearance, children will love them, and you get the peace of mind that you are keeping the real monsters at bay.

1. Chocolate Apples

A perfect alternative to toffee apples, these apples coated in dark chocolate have all the health benefits of dark cocoa. They’re rich in antioxidants and contain qualities which help the heart and circulation, without the high sugar content of toffee and dramatic effect on tooth decay, liver damage and diabetes.

2. Stuffed Pumpkin Peppers

A more savoury option, these stuffed pepper make a great choice if you’re hosting a few children over dinner time! You can get creative with the filling (maybe try spaghetti in a tomato sauce to look like brains spilling out!), or substitute the mince with black beans for a tasty vegetarian option high in protein.

3. Frankenstein Kiwi Heads

Providing 273% of your daily recommended amount of vitamin C (five times more than an orange!), the kiwi is a valuable treat when the nights are getting colder and you’re in need of a natural immune booster! Kiwis also contain 89% of your daily recommended amount of vitamin K, which has been dubbed ‘the forgotten vitamin’ as despite its major benefits, it’s often being overlooked. Vitamin K is crucial for fighting blood clots, strengthening bones and preventing heart disease. Decorate this healthy head with either blueberries or dark chocolate chips and you’re left with not only an exceptionally nutritious snack but a seasonal Frankenstein head too!

4. Strawberry Ghosts

Strawberries have a long list of health benefits, earning their title as a ‘superfood’. Not only do they contain immunity boosting vitamin C, they promote eye health, fight cholesterol, reduce inflammation leading to arthritis, regulate blood pressure and boost fibre.

Tip: for a more accessible product, use vanilla yoghurt. Simply put yoghurt in the freezer until it becomes a little firmer (not frozen!), dip strawberries, place on parchment paper and refreeze after adding dark chocolate chip eyes and mouth!

5. Witches Broomsticks

While cheese has a bad reputation of having a high fat content, this is entirely dependent on the type of cheese you use. This recipe suggests a reduced fat mozzarella, but you can of course make any other substitutions!

Cheese also has substantial health benefits, such as being a rich source of calcium. This is important for bone strength and growth, as well as helping your heart and muscles function properly. There is also a substantial amount of protein in cheese, which our body uses to rebuild muscles, blood, bones and skin.

It’s important to stay healthy over festive holidays. Head to Pinterest for more ideas on how to stay nutritious and delicious this October. Plus, why not replace the tricks with treats with a luscious Apple drink from Hey Like Wow! Get your fill of vitamins B6, C and D, while still enjoying the excitement of ghosts and ghouls with your sugar and spice and all things nice, as well as the rats and snails and puppy dog’s tails!

What is the sugar tax?

sugarThe battle against childhood obesity in the UK came to the forefront of everyone’s mind recently when the Government released its new strategy aiming to tackle this important issue.

The strategy came under criticism and was deemed weak: it only asked for the food and drink industry to join in the fight on a voluntary basis. Jamie Oliver, healthy eating campaigner and school dinner reformist, branded the Government’s efforts a travesty. Jamie didn’t hold back in his criticism and told the Radio Times he thought that “Everything about the childhood obesity strategy that’s just come out is a complete stinking herring. It’s a terrible job Theresa May’s done there.”

One key positive point to pull from the Government’s plan was what’s called the The Soft Drinks Industry Levy. Sounds complicated right? Well it’s not really; all this means is that the Government are calling on soft drinks companies, to reduce the amount of sugar in their products.

Here at Hey Like Wow we’re committed to promoting a healthy lifestyle, always, and to honour this we have made all of our drinks completely sugar free. You won’t find a single grain of sugar in any of our products (we’re pretty proud, can you tell?).

The Levy, or ‘sugar tax’ as it’s often called will mean that companies that choose not to reduce the sugar content of their drinks will face a tax on their products from the government.

In the midst of all this legislation one thing is clear; sugar is awful for our health, and it’s best to avoid it where possible. Rather than pumping your body full of chemicals and nasties, grab a Hey Like Wow drink which is not only completely sugar free, but also enriched with the goodness of vitamins and calcium.

Rainy Day Activities for Kids

Summer holidays are rounding up, but the volatile English weather means we’ve still got to plan some activities for our kids on those rainy days. We’ve put together a chain of building, making, searching, and playing that doesn’t require parents venturing out into the rain to buy supplies to keep our kids entertained all day.

Hey Like Wow kids activities

Building:

  • Books and blankets den: To create your children’s own ‘No Parents Allowed’ den, the house and all its furniture is your oyster! Stack books on top of each other to create walls and drape a blanket over the top for a roof. Duvets, pillows, and cuddly toys add extra comfort, making for a great nap after playtime!

 Making:

  • Painting: Want to keep your kids occupied for hours on end, but don’t have paint? Here’s what you can do; mix 1 cup salt, 1 cup flour, 1 cup water and food colouring to a bottle of ketchup, and have any colour of the rainbow at your disposal.
  • Armed with water guns but missing the summer sun? Fill them with paint instead and fire at a canvas propped on an easel. Lay down newspaper on your floors, and dress in your scruffiest gear before letting loose!
  • Rainbow pizza: Set aside the ice lollies and opt for something to keep your kids warm and cosy inside their dens. Top a pizza base with red and yellow Bell peppers, broccoli, sweetcorn, tomato, and red onions for a healthy meal packed with vitamins.
  • Find more recipes in our guide to Kid-Approved, Healthy and Fun Meal Ideas.

Searching:

  • Treasure hunt: Help your kids get their recommended 5-a-day by hiding five fruits around the house and get creative giving your children clues to help discover them.

Play time! And don’t forget to give your kids a boost with their own Hey Like Wow drinks, packed with Vitamin B6, C and D!

Each Hey Like Wow drink is not only completely free from nasty ingredients like sugar and preservatives, but they are also packed full of awesome vitamins to help you reach your RDA.

All vitamins are different in how they help the body to function, and it can even be a bit confusing figuring out which ones do what. So, this week we’re taking you through exactly how vitamin B6 (also known as pyridoxine) can help you be as healthy as you possibly can! Every single one of our drinks contains 33% of your RDA of vitamin B6, in a variety of delicious flavours- check out our range to see which your favourite is!

There are many health benefits of vitamin B6; a key one is how it helps your metabolism. Your metabolism is the process by which your body is able to break down your food. The body needs vitamin B6 for more than 100 enzyme reactions involved in your metabolic processes, it’s fair to say it’s an essential ingredient!

Vitamin B6 is also involved in production of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, which help to send messages from one part of our brain to another- pretty important stuff! It’s widely believed that a lack of or imbalance in our serotonin levels is linked to depression and anxiety, another reason that B6 is such a key element to our diet and nutrition.

Here are some key sources of Vitamin B6:

  • Cooked Tuna fish
  • Sunflower seeds
  • Pistachio nuts
  • Dried fruit such as apricots, prunes and raisins

Flavour Profile: The Mango

mango

Originating from southern Asia, the mango is known for its unique creamy flavour, what you may not know is that mangoes are packed full of over 20 vitamins and minerals! These vitamins and minerals help your hair and skin be as healthy as they can be- remember beauty starts on the inside. Vitamin A helps keep your immune system strong and functioning, and vitamin C helps our body to heal and recover quickly when it needs to!

Mangoes also give you a healthy dose of vitamin K, which is key to keeping your bones healthy and strong. If its energy you’re lacking then mangoes are what you need- they’re full of B vitamins too, which are great for combatting fatigue. They’re full of antioxidants as well, one of which is zeaxanthin which helps keeps your eyes bright and healthy well into old age.
